35th Annual Meeting of the Willi Hennig Society - XII Reunión de Cladística y Biogeografía

 First Circular 

The 35th Annual Meeting of the Willi Hennig Society will take place together with the XII Reunión Argentina de Cladistica y Biogeografia in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from October 5th to October 8th, 2016. 

The event will be hosted by the Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales "Bernardino Rivadavia" (http://www.macn.secyt.gov.ar), a 200-year old institution with a strong tradition in taxonomy and systematics, which is part of the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET). 

Four symposia have been scheduled 

The origin and early diversification of the modern amniotan clades. 

Chairs: Diego Pol and Martín Ezcurra. 

Paleobotany and the incorporation of fossils in plant systematics. 

Chairs: Alejandra Gandolfo and Dennis Stevenson. 

Methodological problems. 

Chair: Pablo Goloboff 

Biogeography: more than phylogenies 

Chairs: Claudia Szumik and Lone Aagesen. 

Course on Principles of Phylogenomics 

This brief course (3.5 days) will be held after the meeting, from October 10th to 13th. The course is organized by MACN and the Sistema Nacional de Datos Genómicos (SNDG, Argentina). The course is offered by Rosa Fernández (Museum of Comparative Zoology and Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, Harvard University). Additional information will be provided as the date of the meeting approaches.

Registration fees cover all events, except the optional ticketed Banquet which will have an additional fee (approx. $50, free for students). 

Travel grants 

The Willi Hennig Society will support the travel of graduate students and recently graduated Ph.D. scientists who will either present an oral paper or poster to attend the XXXV Annual Meeting in Buenos Aires, Argentina (October 5–8, 2016). 

In previous years, up to 10 Marie Stopes and up to 5 Kurt Milton Pickett Intercontinental travel awards were available. Starting this year, the Willi Hennig Society will increase the number of awards in the event of submission of additional qualified applications. The Travel Award Committee and the WHS President will determine the number of additional awards. 

Travel to Buenos Aires from within South America: Marie Stopes Travel Award not to exceed US$600 each. 

Travel to Buenos Aires from outside of South America (including Central America): Kurt Milton Pickett Intercontinental Travel Award not to exceed US$1,200 each 

Eligibility requirements: 

1) Graduate students or recent Ph.D. graduates <1 at="" meeting="" nbsp="" of="" p="" post-ph.d.="" the="" time="" year="">

2) Presentation of either an oral paper or a poster 

3) Student advisor to certify current enrollment in or recent graduation <1 a="" ago="" at="" from="" meeting="" nbsp="" of="" p="" ph.d.="" program="" the="" time="" year="">

All application materials should be e-mailed to the chair of the Student Travel Award Committee, Torsten Dikow , in a single PDF document. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Este evento es una reunión, de interés tanto nacional como regional, organizado por la Asociación Argentina de Malacología (ASAM), en el ámbito del CCT- CONICET – Mendoza y la Universidad Nacional de Cuyo (UNCuyo).

El Comité Organizador tiene el agrado de anunciar la realización del Noveno Congreso Latinoamericano de Paleontología, el cual habrá de tener lugar en la ciudad de Lima, Perú, del 20 al 24 de Septiembre de 2016.

Por primera vez en su historia, el Perú albergará este importante evento, por lo cual estamos abocados a brindar el mejor escenario posible para su desarrollo, tanto en el aspecto científico como en la hospitalidad hacia los participantes, especialmente los venidos del exterior.

Las presentaciones de trabajos para el Congreso se realizarán bajo las modalidades de ponencia oral y de poster. El envío de los resúmenes podrá realizarse a partir del 10 de Noviembre de 2015 y hasta el 01 de Mayo de 2016 (fecha limite) al correo resumenes@congresopaleoix.com

Los resúmenes aprobados serán publicados en un volumen impreso, editado por el Comité Organizador, y tambien en formato de CD. Los trabajos que, a juicio del Comité Científico, tengan trascendencia saltante, serán seleccionados para su publicación in extenso en un volumen especial

Se invita encarecidamente a los participantes a presentar propuestas para la organización de simposios, mesas redondas, talleres y actividades similares. Dichas propuestas pueden ser presentadas hasta el 01 de Enero de 2016 al correo organizacion@congresopaleoix.com

Las actividades comprenderán también salidas al campo, las cuales tendrán lugar a la finalización del Congreso.

11° CONGRESO DE LA ASOCIACIÓN PALEONTOLÓGICA ARGENTINA (PRIMERA CIRCULAR)

La Comisión Organizadora tiene el agrado de invitar a Ud. a participar del 11º Congreso de la Asociación Paleontológica Argentina (anteriormente denominado Congreso Argentino de Paleontología y Bioestratigrafía). Este evento se llevará a cabo la semana del 17 al 21 de octubre de 2016 en la ciudad de General Roca, provincia de Río Negro.

Durante el 11º Congreso de la Asociación Paleontológica Argentina se presentarán comunicaciones orales y/o póster. La fecha límite para el envío de los resúmenes será el 15 de junio de 2016. Los mismos serán publicados en modalidad electrónica en el suplemento de la revista Ameghiniana.

XI CONGRESO DE LA ASOCIACIÓN PALEONTOLÓGICA ARGENTINA

Tenemos el agrado de anunciar que el XI CONGRESO DE LA ASOCIACIÓN PALEONTOLÓGICA ARGENTINA (ex Congreso Argentino de Paleontología y Bioestratigrafía) se realizará en la ciudad de General Roca (Río Negro, Argentina) durante los días 17 al 21 de octubre de 2016.

La reunión ya cuenta con el auspicio de la Universidad Nacional de Río Negro (Sede Alto Valle y Valle Medio) y de la Municipalidad de General Roca.

XIV CONGRESO NACIONAL DE PALEONTOLOGÍA (M. MÚZQUIZ, COAHUILA)

El XIV Congreso Nacional de Paleontología se realizará en el Teatro de la Ciudad en la ciudad de M. Múzquiz, Coahuila, del 18 al 24 de octubre de 2015. Debido a la lejanía el lugar y para que todos aprovechen al máximo de este evento, se desarrollará durante cinco días llenos de actividades que incluyen:

CALENDARIO DE EVENTOS

VI CONGRESO ARGENTINO DE CUATERNARIO Y GEOMORFOLOGÍA

Se realizará en la ciudad de Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, entre el 8 y 12 de abril de 2015. La curiosidad que despierta la región más austral de Argentina nos ha llevado a organizar el  uso del tiempo disponible muy cuidadosamente, proponiendo no sólo la realización de una serie de conferencias con invitados especiales y la presentación de trabajos en sesiones orales y de posters, sino también varias salidas al campo. 

ÁREAS TEMÁTICAS

Aspectos relacionados con la temática del Congreso son: estratigrafía y geocronología del Cuaternario, paleontología (diatomeas, moluscos, foraminíferos, palinología, fitolitos, paleobotánica, vertebrados), dendrocronología, cambio climático, paleoclimas, cuaternario pampeano, paleolimnología, paleomagnetismo, magnetismo ambiental, hidrogeoquímica, geoarqueología, geomorfología, estructural y neotectónica, paleosuperficies, volcanismo, riesgos, geomorfositios-patrimonio natural, cartografía digital. 

PRESENTACIÓN DE RESÚMENES

Los resúmenes podrán ser presentados para ponencias orales o posters, resultantes de trabajos de investigación avanzados o finalizados. Los mismos serán enviados a dos  árbitros para su revisión y/o aprobación. Las comunicaciones y las conferencias invitadas serán publicadas en el Volumen de Resúmenes. No se recibirán trabajos completos. El comité científico invitará a los autores a publicar sus trabajos en revistas científicas nacionales e internacionales que han ofrecido volúmenes especiales. El idioma oficial para la presentación de los resúmenes es el español, aunque también se aceptarán trabajos en inglés y portugués. La aceptación estará sujeta a la evaluación del Comité Científico.

CONFERENCIAS PLENARIAS

Han confirmado su participación como conferencistas 5 reconocidos investigadores de Argentina y el extranjero. Los títulos de las respectivas exposiciones serán informados más adelante.

Se está gestionando la realización de un curso sobre sensores remotos radar a cargo del Dr. Héctor Del Valle (CENPAT-CONICET). La fecha y costo se informará en la siguiente circular y en la página web.

1. Trace Fossils in Evolutionary Palaeoecology by Gabriela Mángano & Luis Buatois (University of Saskatchewan, Canada).

Duration: 2 days.
Course description: The aim of this short course is to review some of the major evolutionary events in the history of life from an ichnologic perspective. Topics such as Ediacaran ecosystems, the Cambrian and Ordovician radiations, the colonization of the land, the end-Permian mass extinction and the Mesozoic Marine Revolution will be covered.

2. Arthropod Phylogeny by Greg Edgecombe (Natural History Museum, London, UK).

Duration: 1 day.
Course description: This course will aim to integrate the anatomical and molecular evidence for how extant arthropods are inter-related with morphological data from the fossil record. The course is aimed at invertebrate palaeontologists who are interested in learning more about the neontological basis for arthropod phylogeny, as well as phylogenetics who are interested in exploring how different data sources intersect.

3. Micropalaeontology, Biostratigraphy and Palaeobathymetry in Petroleum Basins by Felix Gradstein (Natural History Museum, University of Oslo, Norway).

Duration: 2 days.
Course description: The short course dealing with Petroleum Exploration geology, Micropalaeontology, Biostratigraphy and Palaeobathymetry in Petroleum Basins is designed to provide insight in the industrial utility of Mesozoic and Cenozoic shelly microfossil types and assemblages. This intensive course is intended for professionals and advanced students interested in applied Micropalaeontology.

4. Analytical Taphonomy by Michal Kowalewski (Florida Museum of Natural History, Gainesville, USA).

Duration: 1 day.
Course description: This short course will review research design strategies commonly applicable to taphonomic problems, examine common types of taphonomic variables, and provide an overview of quantitative methods particularly suitable for taphonomic analyses. Examples of data analyses using R and PAST will form an integral part of the course.

5. Stratigraphic Palaeobiology by Mark Patzkowsky (Pennsylvania State University, USA) & Steve Holland (University of Georgia, USA).

Duration: 1 day.
Course description: This short course will introduce participants to basic sequence stratigraphic concepts and the influence of stratigraphic architecture on the distribution and abundance of fossils. The course will emphasize the interpretation of origination and extinction patterns, morphological evolution, partitioning of diversity, and gradient ecology in the context of a sequence stratigraphic framework.

AASP Student Awards AASP - The Palynological Society will support travel for students presenting their contribution at the Annual Meeting at the IPC4 in Mendoza. IFPS Funding for Attendance The International Federation of Palynological Societies (IFPS) will also support participation of students (M.Sc. or PhD) presenting palynological results at the IPC4.
